Christmas/New Year Closedown 2010 -11
The Christmas and New Year Holiday arrangements memo has arrived in Special Education worksites and as in previous years, its delivery has caused a flurry of calls to your union from members.
NZEI did not receive notification of the extended timeframe to the closedown period until after it was sent to Special Education staff.. We were very disappointed by this action and have raised concerns directly with the MoE HR.
The memo outlines an opportunity for you to put a proposal to your manager before 25 November if you wish to return to work prior to the end of the closedown period.
I know some of you will feel annoyed about this situation however the memo the MoE have put out meets all requirements of current legislation.
You all deserve a well earned rest following this past year of uncertainty with the staffing reductions within the MoE and the ongoing stressful situations you encounter in your day to day work.

We would have something to say if LWOP was forced upon someone, however legally this actually can be used as a way of having a closedown, as can
anticipation of annual leave.

some of us would like the opportunity to accumulate leave to visit relatives in other countries as not everyone has their family in the same country these days. We don't have access to teachers' holidays so should have the right to take leave when it suits us best not when a paternalistic employer decrees.
I am aware of a situation when anticipated leave without pay was forced upon someone who had run out of annual leave.
