GSE staff should be regarded as frontline because they provide an essential service in terms of supporting schools to educate some of the most vulnerable an educationally complex individuals in the system. These are children on the edge because of severe mental health or medically and psychiatrically complex students through to children with large developmental delays who are being mainstreamed and supportes in the system.

I agree, Joanne, it seems difficult if not impossible to imagine how we could do our jobs if we were not, in fact, front line staff.
There is no doubt that GSE staff are frontline. They directly support students with severe communication disorders, complex behaviour and learning difficulties. One example of frontline staff within GSE are Speech Language Therapists. They provide intensive face to face work with students, and provide support to their teachers and families. They are involved in providing therapy according to different service delivery models which are appropriate to individual students. Schools, early childhood centers and families are asking for more Speech Language Therapists due to the face to face frontline work they continue to provide. Speech Language Therapists focus on developing communication, which in turn facilitates the development of better literacy skills. Children without adequate language skills do not have the foundation skills necessary for learning to read and write. Speech Language Therapists are thus by definition essential to education and can only be defined as frontline staff.
